A partner may influence the way that a significant other views climate change, according to a new study. While it is not hard to understand that one partner may be able to change the way the other feels about food or the decor of the home, the same has never been looked at when it comes to important topics like climate change. And because of this, researchers set out to determine if one romantic partner could change the other's views about the state of the planet and encourage them to make changes when it comes to climate change.

Researchers from Yale Program on Climate Change Communication at the Yale School of the Environment discovered that when one half of a couple is passionate about climate change and wants to answer the call to action to clean up the planet, the other half becomes more interested in the state of the earth, according to Study Finds.

This has to do with the fact that "loved ones are more convincing than an ad," per the publication. As such, when one half of the couple is very concerned about the climate and the other is indifferent, there is the potential for the concerned half to persuade their partner as to why being pro-climate is important.

The study, which was published in the journal, Journal of Environmental Psychology, found that while there is the potential for positive influence on climate change, many couples' beliefs about climate change do not align. This is because of 758 couples, only 38 percent of couples had the same view on climate change. Just 31 percent practiced the same behaviors when it came to climate change, per the study.

As such, more often than not, it takes communication between partners to get both individuals in a relationship on the same page when it comes to the state of the planet and how to make it a better place.

According to the Yale School of the Environment, none of the couples in the study shared opposite views from one another. As such, it can make it easier to influence those close to take more action to help reverse the state of the climate and to take climate change more seriously.

What researchers want to determine next is if those concerned about the environment would have the same influence over close friends as they do with romantic partners, per the publication. But, considering that there is not a lot of open communication going on about climate change from those who are concerned to friends and family, according to Study Finds, this is something that remains unknown.

It is apparent to researchers, however, that the more communication there is from one person to another in a romantic relationship, the better the alert gets out about how devastating climate change is.
